The inevitability of catharsis

Yuliya Berezhko-Kaminska and I already have a common “child”. Spiritual. After all, back in 2010, another collection of her poems “Between exhalation and inhalation” was published with my foreword “The one who thinks with the heart”, where I wrote, in particular: thanks to the depth of the vocation, feeling-understanding: “Yuliya does not seem to pay a penny to literary fashion, intuitively, thanks to the depth of her vocation, feeling and understanding: the eternal is always fashionable, because it is reproductive. Yuliya Berezhko-Kaminska, by the will of fate and the fate of will, belongs to the poets who are active, even engaged in the Internet, but not loud, not unfounded, not empty-seed… In general, she is my poet. Both as a person and as a master, who creates rhythm, rhyme, voice, song from words, metaphors, space-silence between them… not destroying, but preserving the traditional, millennia-honed code of Ukrainian, maybe even wider – Slavonic spiritual soul. There are very few of her generation”.
I wasn’t mistaken.
Yuliya-the-Word remained as she was and continues to grow vertically, where depth is height, and height is depth…
The book “Between exhalation and inhalation” was successfully accepted by people. After her there were wonderful collections “So I want to live”, “Whispers and aloud”, “Garden. Visible and invisible”, “Inevitable”… And twelve years later “Gravity of the word” appears.
However, if between the then Yuliya’s “inhale and exhale” the happiness of creating a poetic world was breathtaking, now her word has reached the gravitational (property of weighty subjects to be attracted to each other) level and has a chance to become the Logos further, because, as I found out, The Universe recently hosted the Quantum Transition — the proton decreased by 4 percent, so all the organic matter, the density of matter has changed … And since the laws of the spirit, to which all verbal poetry and the poetry of Yuliya Berezhko-Kaminska in particular are directly subordinated, are no less accurate than the laws of biophysics, so when its vibration changes, the whole universe changes….
Yuliya goes to this change, controlled by her free high love, consciously, deriving various “dances” with the Ukrainian word — from folk to postmodern, but without going beyond the Cretaceous circle of organicity. Her magic is non-chemical. That is why, I emphasize once again, it is reproductive: it stimulates, picks up on the creativity and co-creation of other poets, produces options…
Let’s try to imagine what this world would be like if Yuliya’s poetry materialized!..
Like everything organic and reproductive, it is part of a game of the Universe with itself…
And it’s great!
And in the deaf Middle Ages, Yuliya would have been burned or drowned for that…
I would save her…

.

* * *
But let us descend to a sinful land.
In the last 12 years, the volatile-energetic Yuliya has published seven books of poetry. All collections were marked by the cultural and information space of Ukraine (in particular, the book “Inevitable” was awarded four All-Ukrainian literary prizes).
And if in the first collections with the Women-Muse, Women-Guardian, Women-Mavka… naturally lyricism-love prevailed, then “Gravity…” is a philosophical lyric with a love-intimate separate sounding… and a red-black thread stitched throughout the book through the prism of various moods and tonalities, consciously or superconsciously, and perhaps subconsciously, psycho-philosophically, archetypically, model, matrix, prayer, meditationally…
However, in fact, in order that the meditativeness, continuity and river infinity of Yuliya’s text canvas do not tire her, intuitively feeling this existential danger, the author in “Gravity of the Word” not only changes the meaning and spirit, but also breaks the form. Such a gesture of the underwater wing is inherent and is in the desire of only real poets.
This Book opens with the light-warm, fragrant, sunny chapter of “Honey plants”, which is like Lono-Eden, where we all come from… and which we carry within us even after being banished from it… It starts with water — because we all came out of it and 80 percent of us is water, which is subject to the law of circulation in nature — so, perhaps, the last chapter of Yuliya is intuitively finished with the theme of river, rapid, sharp, heavenly water, boundless morning sea, which also breathes in ourselves, rocking “eternal sun” of the soul. From poem to poem, the author conveys the reader in the hands-wings of new sensations — the experience of one’s own being among the Carpathian Mountains with all their fragrant meadows, sounding streams, sky-high peaks; travels through the streets of the hometown, soaked in the morning rays, walks in the garden, where roses bloom and apples ripen. No matter what canvas is revealed to the reader — it is “grounded” by love of life – mature, warm, quiet — and gratitude…
The first chapter seems to hint: absorb all that is beautiful, fill yourself to the brim, because there is a trial ahead, a life with all its fractures, difficult choices, doubts, inconsistencies… black and white pain. Ahead, finally, are autumn and winter… Inevitable separation. And you will need these honey memories.

.

* * *
If Yuliya Berezhko-Kaminska’s poetry is classically strict in general, then it is in “Gravity of the Word” that the author deliberately shakes the rigid framework of traditional poetry in many works, allowing her voice and intonations to be released – and to sound different, unexpectedly for herself, to show new rhythmic motifs of white dance with a word that pairs and multiplies sometimes not according to syllable-tonic poetry, but the music of poetry, which is characterized by rhythm. But in this rhythm there is already more “air” and opportunities for maneuvering in multidimensional space, where some poems are close to musical improvisations (“I’d like to become a song…” — by Lesya Ukrainka) and begin with finding a rhythmic pattern, intuitive “feeling” its cosmic-intimate, polar pulse – as if the author listens to external and internal sounds, mixes them and goes, flies after them, “on the go” already catching the heartbeat of a child’s poetic work, such as:
The night comes, and my earthly miracle — home,
Enlightened with honey plafonds,
Permeated with smell of the nutmeg,
Doesn’t let me go…
The stars tremble with sleepy forms,
The wind checks the first ice,
The moon beckons — come out, look,
My craters are like eyes…
And insides of my house round off the edges, —
As in the womb – it’s quiet and warm.
Father,
In the sky of this Earth
It’s excitingly indescribable,
When the wind — wind with frost —
Breathes into the oceans nightly,
And it moves something so bread-in-bone,
And it rolls over so vivacious —
When to get out of house,
The infinity touches the soul,
Penetrates into all divisions
Of forgotten years, with no freedom,
When the other rivers trickling
And were born other peoples…
All’s — from somewhere, to and for something
In unforeknowable vortex.
Home, sleep and stand on defensive
Of aeon, immortality, darkness.

… I would like to interrupt the quote to catch my breath – but well: there are really no semantic dots in Yuliya’s poems, it is a continuous creation, a continuous act of love…
Despite giving freedom to rhythm in many poems, the poet-magician stubbornly does not betray rhyme, although sometimes she hides them more deeply, using additional internal rhyme, breaking lines into arbitrary intonation intervals, amplifying them with alliterations, associative rhymes… But gravity, gravity of the rhyme and the word hold the frame firmly! That means, the game with shades of meanings of the word reaches logistical virtuosity, where eternity and infinity already reign, where the same desperate people as Julia are already dominating.
But poetry in all times and peoples was and is (and probably will be …) not for everyone…
Every nation has as many true readers of poetry as its creators, regardless of population. Such is the spiritual law.
Obeying it, the poet-reader, as well as the poet-creator, are integral components of one spiritual-mental-physiological formula: poetry is a multilayered work of co-creation at the subconscious level. And the creation of poems is a kind of meditation, when the “ratio” is turned off and the inner vision is faced with something that cannot be manifested in the hustle and bustle of life’s humor, fuss…
That is why a separate chapter is devoted to Silence in “Gravity of the Word”, where Silence is glorified as Matter in which Everything is already laid down, but this All must be helped to manifest for all who are allowed to feel and consider the poet’s collaboration with the Almighty – Supreme Poet! To create a new world from dark matter, from this “nothing”, by breathing life into it. And this life spiritualizes and deifies the one who creates it, reads it (and, therefore, co-creates it), memorizes it, writes a preface…
So, swaddling, kissing every single word she takes, Yuliya encodes, enchants her life with its sparks-moments and epochs-bonfires, where there are no words-ballast, words-rolling pins, driven into the fingers of the soul, painful for the creator, though not always visible to the reader.
Actually, with the apparent magnetic freedom, lightness, spontaneity of writing texts, the poetic Tree of Yuliya Berezhko-Kaminska is edited, arranged with a sharp cut of “dry branches” to be with correct accents, cases, logic of images, so as the rhythm not stumbles and the epithet not falsifies.
Therefore, when impressed by “Gravity of the Word” as the only express flow of ordered chaos, the flow of super- and subconscious, each of its segments (poem) has its own smell, taste, shades of color, its energy-matter can be touched… But not with the mind (because the mind, according to Yuliya, is not able to comprehend poetry in depth), but with the soul — no matter how banal it may sound.

.

* * *
The theme of the genus, which was first revealed by the author in her previous book “Inevitable” (“I look around — behind me buzzing genus”), appears in the gray, inhabited continent, and in “Gravity of the Word” it is radically revealed in the whole chapter. But the images of women (mothers, grandmothers, great-grandmothers) for Alter ego ceased to represent specific close relatives, and together with the images of plowmen-sowers, warriors, masters, great-grandmothers… grew to the level of archetypes, as the old nut became the Genus Tree for the Poet, the tree that gives the earth not just nuts, but generations of their children, bringing them up and letting them go.
The nut of Yuliya Berezhko-Kaminska, as befits the sub-image of the World Tree, becomes cosmic, stretches to the stars with branches and roots. Its roots are winged, and the wings-branches are like the roots of the stars, the whole Cosmos, which is always present — above us and in us together, being the Silence that we enter in the creative process in our inner world.
And the nuts are falling down and down,
No leaves are left in here, yes.
No autumn that on all accounts
Tried to warm pre-winter days.
Sweepy life on highway races round,
By the rain is crumbled the last grass,
And the nuts are falling down and down,
As if they are not less than the stars.
/…/
Sees that nut the miracle of heaven,
Like he is the seedsman of the world,
Like he has huge numbers, very many
Shells and years that can be non-void!

At the same time, the theme of Evolution as a Way passes through the theme of the Genus. Everything grows, springs, develops, unfolds, branches out, knows itself together with the lyrical hero who is in search, in the neuro-harmonious feeling of his Way, holding on to the “threads of light”, taking himself, his heroes and readers out of the cold darkness of despair. This is the constant unfolding of the Universe with the Word, filling it with Sound despite the non-nonproliferation of sound in a vacuum… It is a longing for something inexplicable, but embedded in our souls…
This is GRAVITY OF THE WORD…

.
* * *
The book ends, as it began, with water, which, having once again made a natural cycle, during which it became fog, rain, ice, stream and full river, the vastness of the ocean, steam, tears… became high — that means, the chapter “High Waters”, which came as through the desert comes the human soul, after the Silence, after the discovery of deep ties with his Genus and Cosmos, after the dry, hot, scorching winds…
High water can cause trouble, become a new Flood. But the High Waters of “Gravity of the Word”, on the contrary, will strengthen our spiritual shores, fill spiritual rivers, give new life to psychic “turbines”, saturate the winged roots of our dreams with oxygen, sweep away the superfluous, artificial, dishonest, insignificant. And when all that hurts is over, this water-tear will self-purify and carry Goodness, Power, Beauty, Love in all its three states, where even ice is warm if it is gravitational…”
I stand and listen to springs of the birds,
As orphans on back for me are the words,
Silence for me is as with a sword.
And music plays between and in words,
Rhythms are honed,
Rhymes are grown,
And as wormwood honey it flows… —
echoes the author with her close to the nerve of creativity and life creativity of Lesya Ukrainka “I stood and listened to the spring …”

.

* * *
So, dear Reader, you can see “Gravity of the word.” The appeal of the word.
The magnetism of the poet’s magmatic word, which “has reached its height and strength” (according to Pavlo Tychyna).
In general, this poetry is very feminine — as a Christianized pagan ritual of making and kneading dough for a wedding loaf or farewell bread, which is about to go into the oven with the whole world of yesterday…
The falcon-swan height of sorrow of the chosen words makes them similar to neo-pagan prayers, spells, Silence mourning…
You should be especially careful with the word, as with fire, because you do not know that it can burn to ashes if you rise high. But when this fire is the “spark of God”, it is able to heal, purify, warm from within, illuminate the tunnel of eternity, give the participants a real, not imitated, “living fire of the soul”.
Yuliya Berezhko-Kaminska is looking for such a gravitational catharsis in herself and in the works of other authors.
